OCD is one of the most misrepresented conditions in popular culture. Real OCD isn’t about liking things neat or double-checking the stove. It’s a cycle of intrusive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions) performed to reduce the anxiety those thoughts produce. The relief is temporary, and the cycle continues.
The good news is that OCD responds well to treatment. Our Tampa therapists specialize in the approach that research consistently shows works best.
How We Treat OCD: Exposure and Response Prevention
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the gold standard treatment for OCD. It works by gradually exposing you to the thoughts or situations that trigger obsessions, while supporting you in resisting the compulsive response. Over time, your brain learns that the feared outcome doesn’t materialize and that the anxiety is tolerable — and the cycle weakens.
ERP is not about forcing you to feel terrible. It’s done collaboratively, at a pace that allows for real learning rather than overwhelming distress. We also incorporate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) elements for clients who benefit from a values-based approach to managing OCD.
Types of OCD We Treat
We work with all presentations of OCD, including contamination OCD, harm OCD, relationship OCD (ROCD), scrupulosity, Pure O (primarily obsessional), symmetry and order compulsions, and health-related obsessions. Many people are surprised to learn how varied OCD can look.
