Grief is not a problem to be solved on a timeline. It’s a response to loss, and loss comes in many forms. The death of a spouse, a parent, a child, or a friend. A divorce. A miscarriage. The loss of a job, an identity, a version of your future you had planned on. Whatever brought you here, your grief is valid and you don’t have to carry it alone.
Our Tampa grief counselors provide compassionate, individualized support for people in the middle of loss as well as those dealing with grief that’s been unprocessed for years.
What Grief Can Look Like
We often think of grief in the context of death, and the loss of someone you love is absolutely one of the most painful things a human being can experience. But grief shows up in many other forms too:
- Divorce or the end of a significant relationship
- Estrangement from family members
- Miscarriage, infertility, or pregnancy loss
- Loss of a career, identity, or sense of who you were
- A chronic illness diagnosis — yours or a loved one’s
- Losing a pet
- The accumulated weight of many smaller losses over time
All of these are real losses, and all of them deserve real support.
How Grief Counseling Helps
Therapy doesn’t make grief disappear. What it does is give you a space to process what you’re experiencing without feeling like a burden to the people around you, develop meaning-making around the loss, manage the secondary effects of grief (depression, anxiety, sleep disruption, isolation), and learn to carry the loss in a way that allows life to continue.
We draw on approaches including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Complicated Grief Treatment, and narrative therapy, depending on your situation.
When Grief Becomes Complicated
For some people, grief doesn’t follow a forward trajectory. It stays intense, intrusive, and disabling well beyond what would typically be expected. This is called complicated grief (or Prolonged Grief Disorder) and it’s more common than most people realize, especially after sudden, traumatic, or ambiguous loss. If that describes your experience, specialized treatment is available and it works.
